Program Description
COSEE-TEK and UConn’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program have collaborated to develop a two-day intensive overview of ocean science and technology for LSAMP undergraduate scholars. This program has evolved into the Ocean Science and Technology Challenge (OSTC), a multi-faceted program that provides students with an overview of careers in ocean science and technology and opportunities to work as a team coached by a COSEE-TEK technician to design and build an ocean technology of their choice to meet the annual challenge theme. Students then have the chance to test their designs in the real world on the waters of Long Island Sound. Finally they also get a chance to collect data using current ocean technologies and to pilot a remotely operated vehicle. This program has expanded to include all five universities in the Northeast LSAMP Alliance.
COSEE-TEK's mission is to innovate and adapt approaches to improve the quality, availability, and impact of ocean science education by linking science, technology, and engineering to catalyze learning and communication of STEM topics for teachers, students, scientists, and the public.
