 COSEE at Conferences
SACNAS National Conference, Seattle, October 11-14 The COSEE NCO helped to coordinate the second Ocean Sciences "street" in the exhibit area, organizing several ocean sciences-focused organizations to highlight the growing presence of OS within the SACNAS community, and will host a booth. The COSEE NCO will also host a Professional Development Session: Developing a Workforce to Support a Healthy Ocean, scheduled for Saturday, October 13.

COSEE staff will also host an Ocean Sciences table during the Meet the Scientist session, an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to sit down in a casual setting to ask practicing professionals about their field and what it takes to establish a career. Please contact Liesl Hotaling if you are interested in volunteering for the Meet the Scientists session.

Scientist Engagement Working Group The case studies for Dr. Jude Apple (Western Washington University, COSEE Pacific Partnerships) and Dr. Joel Hoffman (Environmental Protection Agency, COSEE Great Lakes) have been approved and are now posted on the COSEE Scientists Making an Impact website. Work on the case study for Dr. Mary Jane Perry (University of Maine, COSEE-Ocean Systems) is nearing completion. Please visit the COSEE Scientists Making an Impact website and contact Jessie Kastler with any questions or comments.

Web Working Group The WWG and RWS continue to work on the new interactive home page for COSEE.net. COSEE Centers will be able to pinpoint areas of interest (e.g. scientist research areas) on a rotating globe which, when clicked upon, will open a box containing information on that locale. For more information, contact Annette deCharon, WWG Chair.

ENT Sub-Group Excellence in Network Tools subgroup (ENTS) members have been discussing useful ways to highlight cyberlearning resources, including the potential for developing a cyberlearning “Best of COSEE” guidebook. For more information, contact one of the ENTS co-chairs Catherine Cramer and Carla Companion.

Open Tree of Life A new initiative from NSF aims to build a comprehensive tree of life that brings together everything scientists know about how all species are related, from the tiniest bacteria to the tallest tree. Researchers are working to provide the infrastructure and computational tools to enable automatic updating of the tree of life, as well as develop the analytical and visualization tools to study it. More information here.

COSEE Great Lakes The Lake Huron Shipboard and Shoreline Cruise aboard the RV Lake Guardian is underway. Follow along on the cruise blog.

COSEE Island Earth Popular talk radio show Hawaii’s Tomorrow recently began including monthly segments on marine science and conservation hosted by COSEE Island Earth. Interviews with students and faculty from University of Hawaii and Federal partners in marine sciences and management gave local listeners a view into the issues and research currently being done at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology and elsewhere in the Hawaiian Islands. COSEE Island Earth program manager Carlie Wiener hosted the show, filling in for daily host Jeff Davis. So far two successful programs have occurred on May 16 and June 5, 2012. The next show is planned for July 23. Featured guests have included faculty researchers Dr. Brian Bowen, Dr. Marc Lammers and Dr. Robert Toonen; graduate students Jonathan Whitney and Nyssa Silbiger; and NOAA partners including Dr. Charles Littnan from the monk seal program, and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. To hear show podcasts, CD requests can be made to cwiener@hawaii.edu.

COSEE NOW The COSEE Broader Impacts Wizard Overview can now be seen on Vimeo.

COSEE OCEAN COSEE OCEAN’s work on analyzing ocean education networks was presented at the NetSci 2012 conference on June 18, as part of the symposium on infusing network science into education. COSEE OCEAN is helping ocean scientists make short videos to connect to the Ocean Science Sequence, which is being piloted in two Boston school districts. Visit the new Make Your Own Science Video website. If you are interested in making a short video, contact Catherine Cramer.

COSEE-Ocean Systems COSEE-OS Scientist Dr. Mary Jane Perry (University of Maine) has co-authored an article in the July 6 issue of Science revealing new discoveries on the mechanics of the North Atlantic Phytoplankton Bloom. Mary Jane and colleagues shared their evidence that eddies are a key component to initiating a bloom even before summer warming begins. Dr. Perry and colleagues worked with COSEE-OS to present a five-part webinar series last summer, and will be featured on COSEE-OS's Scientists Making an Impact case study in July. Read the NSF Press Release.

Almost two years since the first COSEE Research-Based Online Learning Event (ROLE) Model Webinar, the Center has now held a total of 29 webinars, including two interdisciplinary multi-session series (North Atlantic Bloom and Benthic Ecology). With a total of 752 attendees joining from 43 states and Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Canada, Germany Iceland and India, these webinars have reached far beyond people living on the coast. Topics presented have ranged from hydrothermal vents, phytoplankton blooms, and benthic ecology, to climate change and more. The webinars are archived on the COSEE-OS website and on vimeo.com.

COSEE-Pacific Partnerships Community college professional development and planning activities are in full swing at COSEE-PP this summer. The PRIME internship program for community college students has 12 interns working on research projects at marine labs in Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. You can read about their research experiences on the PRIME Blog. Research opportunities for community college students will be discussed at an AGU/NSF-sponsored planning workshop in Washington DC on July 12-13. Jan Hodder and Jude Apple are co-presenting about PRIME. On July 18-21 COSEE-PP is co-sponsoring a workshop in Tacoma, WA with the Supporting and Advancing Geoscience Education in Two-Year Colleges (SAGE 2YC) project. The Preparing Students in Two-year Colleges for Geoscience Degrees and Careers workshop will explore geoscience career opportunities with 40 community college faculty, society representatives, and geoscience practitioners.

In August, COSEE-PP is offering two week-long institutes that will bring together community college educators and research scientists who are investigating marine and coastal ecosystems. Population Linkages in the Pacific Ocean, August 6-9 at the University of Hawaii Kewalo Marine Laboratory, will focus on how genetics is a fundamental tool in spatial population ecology, how to assay genetic variation, and how genetic data can help with marine management using examples from genetic connectivity data on invertebrates and commercial fisheries. Biological and Physical Oceanography , August 20-24 at Shannon Point Marine Center, Western Washington University, will focus on a variety of oceanographic topics and issues related to the marine environment, including plankton communities, microbial processes, marine food-web interactions, ocean and estuarine circulation, oceanography sampling methods and ocean observing systems, evaluating coastal water quality and nutrient concentrations, and analysis of online oceanographic and water quality data.

COSEE SouthEast is hosting the second Research Educator Exchange Forum (REEF) August 9-10 on the NCSU campus. Early career scientists from North Carolina universities will be teamed with university media specialists, and formal and informal educators to learn best strategies for communicating their findings to specific audiences. Scientists will build a network of people and resources to assist them with broader impacts as well as test new skills through a fall-spring outreach program of their own design. For more information, contact Dr. Carrie Thomas, NCSU.

COSEE-West is offering the Ocean Observing Systems: Summer Teacher Institute, a free 5-day workshop for middle and high school teachers, July 30-August 3. More information here.
