Scientist Engagement Working Group The Scientist Engagement Working Group (SEW-G) is wrapping up its work on the case study project COSEE Scientists Making an Impact in Ocean Sciences Education. In June and July 2012 Inverness Researchers, Inc. conducted a summative assessment of the website containing the twelve posted case studies, and has submitted a draft report. A SEWG conference call has been scheduled for August 28 to discuss this evaluation and the final case study of Dr. Mary Jane Perry (University of Maine, COSEE Ocean Systems), which is near completion. This COSEE-wide collaboration was sponsored by a National Science Foundation grant to University of Southern Mississippi, and will conclude on August 31, 2012. Please visit the COSEE Scientists Making an Impact website and contact Jessie Kastler with any questions or comments.
Web Working Group The WWG and RWS are consolidating COSEE resources into a limited number of parent categories to improve user searches. Admins will be able to add subcategories to meet individual Center requirements. Parent categories will consist of Broadening Participation, COSEE Conference Resources, For Educators, For Scientists, For Students, Ocean Science Topics, and (potentially) For the Public. COSEE CGOM (a center not on the CMS) is currently adding over 100 resources to COSEE.net. For more information, contact Annette deCharon, WWG Chair.
ENT Sub-Group Excellence in Network Tools subgroup (ENTS) members have been discussing productive ways to organize COSEE Resources on COSEE.net. For more information, contact one of the ENTS co-chairs Catherine Cramer and Carla Companion. |

| | | Jan Tenbruggencate | COSEE Island Earth Twenty participants attended the Communication in Ocean Sciences Workshop, facilitated by COSEE Island Earth on Saturday, July 28, 2012. Former science writer for the Honolulu Advertiser and keynote speaker Jan Tenbruggencate talked about his experiences and knowledge gained from many years of educating and informing the public on scientific issues. This workshop was put on for Polynesian Voyaging Society educators, students, volunteers, and others who will be participants in the upcoming worldwide sail in 2013. The objective of the workshop was to get the participants familiar with the different means of media and gain some skill and comfort level in sharing their stories. Workshop presentations included how to deal with social media, print sources, television and radio interviews, blogging, and podcasts. Participants had the opportunity to test their new skills, giving trial presentations and receiving feedback for improvement.
The Hawaii Environmental Education Alliance (HEEA) hosted the Hawaii Environmental Education Symposium on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Hawaii Convention Center. As part of the symposium objectives five concurrent sessions with applied themes were lead throughout the day. COSEE Island Earth hosted and sponsored one of these sessions, entitled Kai Connections: Building Education Partnerships in the Ocean Sciences. The session introduced the topic of ocean literacy and aligned these principals with the Hawaii Environmental Literacy Plan, as well as showcased on-going projects at marine science and conservation institutions that facilitate ocean sciences education in the Hawaiian Islands. The sessions also featured talks and activity demonstrations by marine science educators and researchers on a number of topics, including technology in ocean sciences, invasive species and connectivity, and education from a scientists' perspective. The symposium ended with a professional development and capacity-building seminar to boost the potential for environmental education in Hawaii.
COSEE OCEAN The World Maker Faire takes place at the New York Hall of Science (a COSEE OCEAN partner) on September 29-30, and COSEE OCEAN will be there, providing the first ocean science activities during this event that attracts close to 40,000 visitors. With the help of COSEE NOW’s partner MATE, participants will be building and flying ROVs in a 13-foot pool, and grad students from UMass will be leading activities from the Best of COSEE Hands-On Activities collection.
COSEE-Ocean Systems As the 3rd installment of its ongoing webinar series, the Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP) and COSEE-OS presented a “nuts and bolts” session with interactive Q&A on July 25, 2012, targeting undergraduate students interested in learning more about STEM graduate programs and funding opportunities. IBP staff Chris Cash and Liv Detrick, along with special guest Dr. Adrian Ponce (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Manager of Higher Education) provided guidelines, advice and tips for students striving to understand the often non-intuitive and complex application process for graduate school, find a scientist to work with, and apply for fellowships – tasks usually tackled simultaneously during their senior year of college.
Chris and Liv also presented a one-year timeline to help students stay on track and organized amidst the plethora of deadlines, which can quickly become overwhelming especially when applying to multiple programs. They also walked the audience through IBP’s innovative web portal, Pathways to Science to find programs such as undergraduate summer research opportunities, graduate fellowships, postdoctoral positions, as well as resources and materials pertaining to recruitment, retention, and mentoring. More than 120 people attended the webinar, which can be viewed here.
As part of a teacher workshop for Anne Arundel County Schools at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, COSEE-OS demonstrated activities created for NASA's Aquarius Mission, summarized mission science, and highlighted educational resources available in our webinar archives. An overview of the COSEE-OS Concept Linked Integrated Media Builder (CLIMB) was also presented to interested teachers and Goddard staff. Read more here.
