New on COSEE.net this month is the implementation of RSS feeds (also available on all CMS Center sites) for distribution of news. RSS is a web feed format used to publish frequently updated material, such as news, in a standardized format. Our RSS documents (see the one for COSEE.net here) contain the news title, publish date, a blurb of content, and a link to the original news item. To subscribe to the COSEE.net or any Center RSS feed, click on the RSS feed buttons, located on the news web pages. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds for new work on a regular basis, downloads any new updates, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

Smithsonian Panel Discussion and Webcast About Oil Spill Part of the Changing Tides lecture series, brought to you by Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and COSEE, and made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The discussion - One Year After the Gulf Oil Spill – will be held Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 PM at the Smithsonian, and is free and open to the public. The event will also be available as a live webcast. For more information about this lecture and the Changing Tides series visit here.

Ocean Scientist Audio and Video Statements Needed The COSEE National Office is partnering with the Inner Space Center to develop the hardware, software, and related programming to connect U.S. oceanographic research vessels to informal science education institutions. Hardware installations and testing are currently taking place at two aquariums, Mystic and South Carolina, both members of the National COSEE Network and the Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center (CELC) Network. In addition to live programming, prerecorded programs will be available on demand. We are seeking input from the ocean scientist community in the form of short audio and video segments. This opportunity will feature ocean scientists completing the sentence, "I explore the ocean because..." Eventually, millions of people will have access to the programming through the network of CELC kiosks. If you know of ocean scientists who would like this opportunity to highlight their research for the public, please pass their contact information on to Andrea Gingras.

Ocean Literacy and Education Publications Available FREE Science Activities magazine has put all the lesson plans from the special Ocean Literacy issue [Fall 2009] online for free access during the month of April. Lessons range from elementary to high school and were developed by educators from COSEE, NOAA and GK-12 programs. Go to www.informaworld.com/VSCA and choose Volume 46, Issue 3 for access. And don't forget that throughout April 2011, Routledge publishers offers free access to all their education research journals.

On February 28 COSEE OLC partnered with Washington Sea Grant and SoundCitizen to run a Boat-Based Education Workshop at the University of Washington. The all-day workshop began a dialog about enhancing participation of boat-based informal education programs in ocean research. Discussions were intentionally structured to fit within a public participatory framework so organizations were positioned to think of themselves as long-term design partners for developing research projects. Participants left the workshop with excitement and enthusiasm for engaging in authentic science with SoundCitizen and plans are currently under development for future meetings that will expand partnerships with these groups to other ocean scientists.

COSEE Florida Dr. Edie Widder, deep-sea explorer and CEO of the Ocean Research & Conservation Association, collaborated with 27 professional educators to develop ocean-based activities for science classrooms. Dr. Widder lead the group on a simulated dive of the deep sea. COSEE staff, led by Laura Diederick, Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce Education Coordinator, introduced the workshop participants to a variety of stations demonstrating simple but effective activities to communicate important physical and biological properties of the deep sea. More details here.

Aquarius/SAC-D satellite
COSEE Ocean Systems To celebrate the upcoming launch of the Aquarius/SAC-D satellite, COSEE-OS presents a workshop for K-12 educators to be held at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California, June 3-4, 2011. Aquarius will employ advanced technologies to make NASA's first space-based measurements of ocean salinity across the globe - an important observation for ocean and climate studies. From 650 kilometers (400 miles) above Earth's surface, Aquarius will detect changes in ocean salinity as small as a pinch of salt in a gallon of water.

Day 1 of the workshop will feature eminent NASA scientists who will work collaboratively with educators to examine connections between the water cycle, ocean circulation, climate and sea surface salinity. On Day 2, educators will tour the JPL facility, attach scientist-vetted content (e.g., animations and images, news items) to their online concept maps, and conduct hands-on activities that support workshop themes. This model is based on a series of COSEE-OS workshops that team researchers and educators to better communicate scientific content. Applications are due on/before Friday May 6, 2011. Apply here.

COSEE Pacific Partnerships is sponsoring a workshop for community college faculty with Dr. Daniel Roby, Professor, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University, on April 29 at the 2011 Northwest Biology Instructors' Organization Meeting at Yakima Valley Community College in Yakima, WA. The workshop will use information from his research on the ecology of fish eating colonial waterbirds (primarily Caspian terns, double-crested cormorants, and several gull species) and their impacts on the survival of juvenile salmonids in the Columbia River Basin and will include activities suitable for inclusion in community college courses. For more information visit the workshop event page or contact Coral Gehrke.
