COSEE-Networked Ocean World
recently launched their new biweekly podcast Ocean Gazing, highlighting the science, researchers and sounds of Ocean Observing Systems. The first episode of Ocean Gazing features University of Washington oceanography professor and visionary John Delaney. Listen to the episode, view pictures, hear additional clips, and comment on the episode on the COSEE-NOW website. Keep up to date by subscribing to the COSEE-NOW RSS feed.

COSEE-SouthEast Marine Debris Publication COSEE-SouthEast developed and published a middle school, 48-page publication, The Educator's Guide to Marine Debris for the Southeast and Gulf of Mexico. This publication is available online and provides an accessible avenue of ocean science stewardship based on science and volunteer information. COSEE-SouthEast has also produced a poster about marine debris that can be downloaded and printed. See the poster here.

Web Working Group The WWG continues to refine the COSEE websites, concentrating on layout and increased functionality. During the next few months, we will discuss and prioritize methods for handling Network business (e.g. password-protected staff pages, posting of
the COSEE Network Newsletter, etc.) and integrating those Centers not currently on the Content Management System. For more information on the WWG, please contact its Chair, Annette deCharon.

COSEE-Inspired CD The Banana Slug String Band has joined forces with COSEE to write, produce and record their next CD focusing on ocean ecology topics. The working title of the new CD is Only One Ocean and is co-sponsored by COSEE.
COSEE Network Meeting The annual COSEE Network Meeting will be held at the Palmetto Dunes Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, May 4-6, 2009. Contact Andrea Kecskes for more information.

In addition to the above sessions, Annette deCharon (COSEE-Ocean Systems), Liesl Hotaling (The Beacon Institute) and Janice McDonnell (COSEE-NOW) will examine the role of ocean-observing technological advances as a means to understanding coastal change in a short course entitled "COSEE: The Oceans, They Are A-Changin': How Might This Affect You?" Participants will actively interact with professionals from NASA and NOAA and use COSEE-developed materials and classroom activities.
COSEE will also present our new exhibit and Center one-pagers. For those of you planning to attend the convention, you can browse sessions and add them to your personal scheduler through the NSTA website. See y'all in New Orleans!

COSEE, the Smithsonian Institution-Sant Ocean Hall (SI-SOH), NOAA-Office of Exploration and Research, and NOAA-Sea Grant, represented by the Search Committee for the Senior Educator Position at SI-SOH, are pleased to announce that Elizabeth Ban has been selected as the Ocean Science Education Specialist. Journal of Visualized Experiments
JoVE was founded in October 2006 as the first online journal devoted to video-publication of life science research. JoVE has so far released 21 monthly issues including over 300 video-protocols on experimental approaches in developmental biology, neuroscience, microbiology and other fields. To facilitate the integration of video content into scientific publishing, JoVE has developed an organizational and technical structure to perform and/or assist scientists with filming and editing in their labs. Year of Science Ocean and Water Web Pages The COSEE Network supports the Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS) and its Year of Science 2009 2009 project. June 2009 is Ocean and Water month, and web pages are now under construction. Visit the Ocean and Water web page. Woods Hole Diversity Initiative Partnership Education Program (PEP), a consortium of six science institutions, is launching a program this summer in Woods Hole, Massachusetts to bring college undergraduates to the village for a course and research opportunity. PEP is supported by the Woods Hole Diversity Initiative to promote diversity in the Woods Hole science community, and especially seeks students from minorities under-represented in ocean and environmental sciences. The priority date for admission and funding consideration was January 31but inquiries are still welcome. For more information contact PEP Director Dr. Ambrose Jearld.
HBCU Educator at Sea Needed The Consortium for Ocean Leadership (Ocean Leadership) together with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program - U.S. Implementing Organization (IODP-USIO) is currently seeking an educator from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to sail on board the renovated JOIDES Resolution (JR). The HBCU Educator at Sea will be part of IODP Expedition 324 - Shatsky Rise Formation, scheduled to begin in Yokohama, Japan on September 4, 2009 and end in Townsville, Australia on November 4, 2009. This opportunity is open to full-time HBCU educators from science or education departments that are interested in experiencing life on board a scientific vessel, sharing experiences in real-time with land-based audiences, and creating educational materials related to the expedition. The application and further information are available online. The application deadline is April 27, 2009.
Sylvia Earle's TED Wish On February 5, Census of Marine Life U.S. National Committee (USNC) member and ocean advocate Dr. Sylvia Earle was awarded the 2009 TED prize. The prize, awarded at the annual TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) Conference, grants the winner One Wish to Change the World. Find out Sylvia's wish.

Session for Education and Outreach Professionals at NSTA If you are attending the 2009 NSTA conference in New Orleans, consider attending a free 4-hour workshop to build the community of participants using and contributing to the NEO-Sphere website, Wednesday March 18, 1-5:00 PM. The workshop will offer an introduction to the resources on the site and guided instruction in adding and accessing these resources. The ideal participant in this workshop would be an education and outreach professional who serves as the link between basic research projects and the public, whether at a research center, a museum, or a university.
