Goals
1. Add a personal contribution to the museum display.
2. Create a three-dimensional display representing student research
and learning.
Materials
Research materials
All materials students will be incorporating in their display (may
include TV, VCR, tape recorders, computer, etc.)
Old newspapers and magazines
Construction Paper (white as well as various colors)
Stapler and staples
Cardboard
String
Markers and Crayons
Scissors
Time
Approximately 8 hours
Procedure
1. Allow teams to continue researching their topic and begin building
their displays in their designated areas. (Encourage
students to incorporate several modalities [sight, sound, touch,
taste] in their displays as well as personal items.)
2. Each student will choose an object or animal that will fit in their
display and build a soft sculpture:
a. Draw the chosen animal or object, both front and back, on
construction paper.
b. Color and decorate it (students may disregard the natural
coloring of the animal or object to allow for
creativity).
c. Cut out objects or animals.
d. Staple together the front and back about 3/4 around the
entire edge.
e. Stuff the sculpture with newspaper and magazine pages.
f. When full, staple shut the rest of the edge.
3. Label the sculptures with their common scientific names and brief
information about their use or where they can be
found.
4. Mount objects on a piece of cardboard to stand in the display or
hang them from string in the display.
Assessment
1. Each student will place his/her soft sculpture in the display.
(Criteria for success: The sculpture is completed and
shows careful work and creativity. See
Rubric for Sculpture.)
2. The overall completed display will be assessed. (Criteria for success:
Displays are complete, representative of the topic
choice, utilize many modalities, and follow the criteria for good
museum display [see references]. See Rubric
for
Final Museum Display.)
Major Concepts
Art - design, arrangement, sculpture (soft)
Math - Measurement, area, diameter, spatial relations
Extensions
1. Write an essay on the importance of team work and reflect upon how
this affected the museum building process.
