Pearl Harbor

Goals:

1. To illustrate the impact that the bombing of Pearl Harbor had on those living in Green

Bay, Wisconsin.

2. For students to understand the strategy of the Japanese during the bombing of Pearl

Harbor.

Resources/Materials:

1. Video on the Bombing of Pearl Harbor

--Pearl Harbor Remember (Dateline 12-01-97):

2. Green Bay Press-Gazette newspaper articles (December 8, 1941)

Time:

Approximately 1.5 - 2 hours

Procedure:

1. The class will watch a video about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Before watching the video,

the teacher should provide the class with a discussion question which the video will address.

2. After the video has been completed, the students will be given a copy of the articles

from the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

3. After the students have finished reading, there will be a class discussion about the bombing of

Pearl Harbor. Furthermore, the discussion will be enhanced by discussing the impact that Pearl

Harbor had in other parts of the United States.

4. After the class discussion is over, students will be asked to write a journal entry about what

they learned about Pearl Harbor.

Assessment:

1. Class Discussion (Criteria for Success = Demonstration of knowledge gained during this

lesson, class participation is mandatory.)

2. Journal Entry - see writing rubric. (Criteria for Success = No more than 5 grammatical errors.)

Curricular Strands and Major Concepts:

1. Language Arts - Oral Communication, reading for meaning, journalism, writing

2. Social Studies - Pearl Harbor bombing, connecting the bombing with an entirely

different location

Possible Extensions:

1. Arrange for a guest speaker who was in Oahu or in Pearl Harbor during the time of the

bombing.

2. Students could write a reaction paper based on the entire Pearl Harbor incident. They

could explain how the event may have changed their lives if they were alive at the time

(such as the fear and the anti-Japanese sentiment that spread throughout the U.S.)
