NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory/COSEE-West Climate Day October 13, 2011
Climate Day features a variety of presentations by scientists and many activities for students. Here are two web sites teachers can use to help prepare students before Climate Day and to review what they have learned after the event:
This NSF-sponsored site provides a clear and well-organized introduction to the basic concepts of climate science, with examples and many illustrations http://www.cleanet.org/cln/climateliteracy.html
NASA's "Tips and Tricks for Teachers" provides links to several interactive web sites about climate science, all based on current research http://climate.nasa.gov/education/TipsandTricks/
Climate Day - Hands on activities (1280x720).mov
Suggested questions for class discussion:
How do scientists study climate change?
Why is the ocean an important influence on climate?
In what regions of the earth are the most rapid changes being observed?
What is the role of carbon dioxide in climate change?
How is climate related to the water cycle?
Ocean Observing System Summer Teacher Institute – Aug 1-5, 2011
This week-long workshop was created with the help of COSEE-Coastal Trends. This year was our fourth year hosting this workshop and our second year of our teacher exchange program that brought five participating teachers from Colorado. This workshop is designed to introduce middle and high school teachers to near real time data: where to find it, what it means, how to use it, and how it can be adapted for use in the classroom to teach about the scientific process, specifically analytical skills.
Here is the advertising flyer for this workshop.
The learning objectives for this week are here.
