Survival on a Ship
Part
4: Literature Circle
Goals:
1. The teacher will present examples of final creative projects to
help explain to the students what
the "boundaries" are for the final project.
2. The groups will begin to think about possibilities for their final
project
3. For the teacher to introduce the aspects of learning through a
"Literature Circle"
4. To promote further discussion and learning of survival on a ship
in"Literature Circle" groups,
using Timothy of the Cay.
Resources:

Multiple copies of Timothy of the Cay by Theodore Taylor (1993,
Avon Books Pub.)
Time frame: Approximately 2.5 hours
Procedure:
1. The teacher will present models of creative projects on survival
to the students.
(i.e. 3 dimensional model ship, video, skits, etc.)
2. The teacher will explain the "boundaries" for the final creative project
(the boundaries include a creative
project on shipsurvival, water survival, or land survival.)
3. The teacher will inform the students to get into their groups and begin
to brainstorm ideas for a final
4. The teacher will walk around and answer any questions the groups may
haveabout final
5. The teacher will introduce the "Literature Circle" learning activity
6. The students will get into their groups to participate in the "Literature
Circle" learning activity, which
includes taking notes on survival on a ship fromTimothy of the
Cay.
7. The teacher will write aspects of survival on a ship that the students
share with the class
8. The students will take notes on the terms written on the chalkboard.
Assessment:
1. Understanding the boundaries and having knowledge of various possibilities
for the final creative
project (Criteria for success = Students will have little or no confusion
about what they
can do for their final creative project)
2. The groups will brainstorm possibilities for their final project.
(Criteria for success = Students will
have little or no confusion about what they can do for their final
creative project.
3. The students will understand the expectations of the "Literature Circle."
(Criteria for success = The
students do not have any questions about the objectives of the "Literature
Circle.")
4. Further learning through "Literature Circle" discussion (Criteria for
success = Each group will have
identified a major portion of the details of "survival on a ship" from
the novel)
Curricular Connections:
Language Arts-- Using details about "survival on a ship" from the novel
to actively participate in a "Literature Circle," communicating with others
in thegroup and in the class.
