Survival on a Ship
Part
2: Using Computers and the Internet
Goals:
-
To introduce the capabilities of the computer and the importance of using
the Internet for researching and learning.
Resources:
-
Computer databases and Internet access
Time Frame: Approximately 1 hour
Procedure:
1. The students will be asked to divide themselves into groups of
3 or 4.
-Teacher reserves the right to make adjustments of group members if
necessary.
-All members of each group must be from the same classroom, so when
three the classes are
separated, the members will still be together.
2. The teacher will inform the students that these groups will remain
for the entire "survival"
3. The students will be taken to the computer lab.
4. The teacher will give introductory lesson on the basic components
andcapabilities of a computer.
5. The teacher will ask and answer questions to make sure all the
students have abasic understanding of
6. The teacher will give an introductory lesson on the importance and
usage of the Internet.
7. The teacher should give a sample of some of the capabilities of
the Internet.
i.e. Open up Netscape and run a net search on the Green Bay Packers.
8. The teacher will ask and answer questions about the Internet (steps
f through hmay have to be done
by someone other than the teacher, depending on the teacher's knowledge
and understanding of the Internet.)
9. The students will be given time to browse the Internet.
Assessment:
-
Understanding of the capabilities of the computer and Internet. (Criteria
for success = Major portion of students, or at least one from each group,
are having little or no difficulty gaining access to the Internet.)
