1. Webbing Activity - Place "needs" and "luxuries" on board. Using
examples from their home, students will list
various items that fit in each
category.
2. Hand out Career Sheet to students
3. Have students identify at least one skill a person in each career
field possesses.
4. Place students in groups of 2-3
5. Pass out newspapers and allow students time to read classified
ads or research on the internet (or both) to determine
more skills for each career.
6. Have groups place stars (*) by those skills that would contribute
to survival.
7. Pass out “New Islanders,” and have students read.
8. In their groups, students will choose each occupation they would
want the five people to posess on the island.
9. Each group will reveal to class the occupations they chose and
explain why they feel it is necessary for survival.

Assessment
1. Webbing Activity will be assessed through journals. (Criteria for
Success: choose 5 items with support)
2. Each team will hand in “New Islanders” activity. (Criteria for Success:
choose 5 occupations with support)
3. Each student will hand in Career Sheet, identifying skills. (Criteria
for Success: each occupation has at least 3 relevant
skill identified)
4. Each team will present occupations they chose. (Criteria for Success:
each team has support for each occupation)
