Week One

Day One:

  1. Introduce the novel, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. Discuss the procedure for reading, writing and discussion activities.
  2. Begin history lesson one. Primary sources and their importance will be discussed.
  3. Begin trading lesson. Students will research a country and participate in a simulation of trade on the sea.
Day Two:
  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Continue and finish history lesson one.
  3. Continue trading lesson.
Day Three:
  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Introduce natural occurrences project. Students will research a natural occurrence and its relationship to the sea. They will teach what they have learned to their classmates through presentations and visual aids.
  3. Complete history lesson two. Students will be exposed to life at sea through a clip of the movie The Bounty.
  4. Continue trading lesson.
Day Four:
  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Begin history lesson three. Students will research the Revolutionary War era.
  3. Research for natural occurrences project.
  4. Continue trading lesson.
Day Five:
  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Complete history lesson three.
  3. Continue research for natural occurrences project.
  4. Complete trading lesson.


 
Week Two

Day One:

  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Continue research for natural occurrences project.
  3. Begin poetry lesson. Students will be exposed to a different type of literature and examine poems about the sea, navigation, and the stars.
  4. Complete science lesson one. The importance of the Earth's rotation and how it affects the seasons will be examined.
Day Two:
  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Continue natural occurrences project.
  3. Finish poetry lesson.
  4. Complete directions and mapping lesson. Students will learn about navigational directions and be able to draw a map from directional clues.
Day Three:
  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Complete natural occurrences project.
  3. Complete science lesson two. Students will use the sun to find directions.
Day Four:
  1. Continue reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Introduce the culminating book activity. Students will write the next chapter of the novel or produce a dramatization of a scene from the book.
  3. Begin science lesson three. Students will add to what they've already learned by discovering how constellations can help them find directions.
Day Five:
  1. Complete reading, writing, and discussion activities.
  2. Complete culminating book activity.
  3. Finish science lesson three.
