Worksheets
Time Frame: 8 hours (including tours, individual exploration time,
lunch, and travel)
Procedure:
1. Collect permission slips.
2. Remind the students to take their lunches and notebooks, then
board the bus(ses).
3. Once at the museum, divide group up by classes. Classes will split
up, either taking one of the
tours or exploring the museum on their own (worksheet to make sure
the students visit numerous exhibits).
4. Before entering, explain to the students that they will be expected
to behave evenbetter than they
do in school. Also, encourage the students to seek out valuable information
that can be used in final creative project (shipwreck exhibits, W.W.II
exhibits, etc.).
5. Hand out worksheets to be completed during personal exploration time.
Sample questions:
- Who were some of the major players in the Great Lakes Shipping Industry
during the 1800's? What did they transport?
- Give examples of some major shipwrecks in Lake Michigan.
6. Tour guides will explain different museum exhibits and what they represent.
Teacherswill encourage
students to ask questions, demonstrating how by asking questions themselves.
7. The groups doing exploration will visit different exhibits to find
information to fill outthe worksheet.
During this time, teachers will walk around and monitor student learning
by stopping students and asking them to explain one thing they have learned
so far.
8. After first set of tours, break for lunch. Students, teachers, and
chaperons will convene in lobby area.
If weather permits, eat outside along the river. If not, find space
inside or eat on bus.
9. After lunch, groups alternate. Those who took guided tours will do
individual exploration, and
vice versa. Instruct everyone to meet in the lobby by a certain time.
i.e.. - "Everyone be in the lobby by 2:30 so we can be back on time."
10. Make sure everyone is present and board bus(ses).
11. Return to school by the return time stipulated on permission slip.
Assessment:
1. Students experience museum, including guided tour. (Criteria for
success = students attend field trip and guided tours).
2. Students explore exhibits to learn on their own. (Criteria for success
= worksheet completed about different exhibits in museum--X% of questions
answered correctly indicates successful exploration and learning).
Possible Extensions:
1. Students explore Internet to find out about other maritime museums.
2. Students concentrate on one exhibit and write a short expository essay
on it to bepresented in class.
Curricular Connections:
Language Arts - Listening, following directions, question/ answer,
note taking
