Cruisin' with Logic
Solve these logic problems with a partner on a separate sheet of paper. Construct a chart and write out how you reasoned the answers to each problem, as shown in the example problem above.
1. Three stranded islanders send off smoke signals in shifts. The three have a schedule that gives each person a time to start their shift. The shifts start at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Find out when each islander's shift starts.
a. Betty signals at either 12 or 3.
b. Bob doesn't signal at 12.
c. Brenda doesn't signal at 3.
d. Bob signals 3 hours before Brenda.
2. Six good friends all died due to the sinking of the Titanic. Find out the order in which they died.
a. Jack died immediately after John.
b. Robert died right between Tony and Bill.
c. Fred died.
d. Robert died third.
e. John saw at least four of his friends die.
f. Tony died two hours before Bill.
3. Kent, Betty, Tom, Fred, Trina, and Willie are stranded on an island and are dying for just a bite of their favorite food: pizza! They each are imagining themselves at a pizza parlor with their friends, enjoying a slice of their favorite pizza. The toppings they choose are: plain cheese; cheese and pepperoni; cheese, pepperoni, and sausage; cheese and anchovies; the works; and cheese and bacon. Who dreams of what type of pizza?
a. Kent likes only one item other than cheese.
b. Tom sits next to the person who orders cheese and bacon.
c. Kent doesn't like pepperoni.
d. The person who likes two items and cheese sits directly across from Betty.

4. Just before the Titanic sank, three women, Bridget, Sarah, and Sharon (all of different ages), all load into one end of a life boat. Each woman had a different career: nurse, teacher, and journalist. Find out the correct career and age of each woman.
a. Bridget is not a teacher.
b. Sarah is not 21 years old, but her friend is.
c. The nurse is not 27 years old.
d. Sharon's friend is 22 years old.
e. Bridget is 27 years old and her friend, Sarah, is the one who works with children.
5. Karen, Derek, Fay, Tanya, and Scott each have a favorite sea animal. No two of them have the same favorite. Which child goes with which sea animal?
a. Karen's favorite is not the dolphin.
b. Tanya dislikes whales.
c. Someone really likes sharks.
d. Fay likes sea horses.
e. Derek hates octopus and dolphins.
