Lava Facts

- Lava - Molten rock that pours out of volcanoes or from cracks in the earth.

- Temperature can reach 7-12 times hotter then boiling water.

(1300 - 2200 F or 700 - 1200 C)

- It is a solution of silacate materails (oxygen, silicon, aluminum)

- Cools rapidly so few crystals form at the surface.

- Can contian large amounts of dissolved gases.

- Land becomes quite fertile because weathering breacks lava to fine soil.

- 2 types

- aa- viscous/sticky and moves slowly (Rough Flow) Loose layers.

- Pahoehoe- fast, smooth flowing.

- Cools to form a layer over the molten part.

- Has asdeditic or intermediate compostion.
