Amistad Extension

An excellent movie to use with this unit is Amistad. It will be released in the second or third week of December, 1997 in movie theaters. It is described to be a very powerful and graphic movie, therefore probably should not be viewed in its entirety in the classroom, but should be viewed by the teacher for educational purposes. Important clips could be included in various classroom lessons. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg. A preview of the movie and interviews with the leading actors was the topic of the Oprah show on November 11, 1997. The movie was also featured on the cover of Newsweek. The main topic of the movie is slavery and slave trade. It is about a Spanish slave ship called La Amistad. Many actual artifacts, such as the shackles were used in the movie and it is based on factual information. Various articles and photos concerning the movie are also featured in the December 8, 1997 issue of Newsweek.

A junior novel was also released in the first week of December. The novel is based on the screenplay by David Franzoi and Steven Zaillian and the film by Steven Spielberg. The novel is written by Joyce Annette Barnes and published by Puffin Books (ISBN-0-14-039063-4). The summary of the novel follows: In 1839, a young man named Cinque lead a group of illegally enslaved Africans in a revolt against their captors aboard the slave ship Amistad. All they want is to be free, to return to their homes and families. Instead, the Africans land in America where they are imprisoned and charged with murder and mutiny. The Americans don’t see the Africans as people, but as property. Cinque and his fellow captives soon realize that their fight for freedom has only just begun. This true story of triumph over indignity and injustice was an important victory in our nation’s fight for equality for all.
