Letters
Goals:
1. Students will learn the basic foundation of a business letter.
2. Students will learn when to use a business letter and write one of their own.
Resources:
1. Samples of various forms of business letters. (Actual letters would be great.)
Time:
This lesson will take about 2 hours.
Procedure:
Step 1 Introduce the idea of a business letter. Explain the purpose and the uses.
Step 2 Pass out samples of letter for students to look at and get an idea of what they look like.
Step 3 Talk about the specific format found in business letters and the language the is appropriate to this type of letter. You may want to compare a business letter to a letter they would sent to a friend away at camp.
Step 4 Explain that the students will be asked to write a letter to a bank to get a loan. The teacher is the bank. Each group will write a letter.
Assessment:
1. Students will hand in letters. (Criteria for success = the letter will fit the format and use correct grammar and punctuation and will be neatly written or typed.)

Possible Extensions:
1. Students could explore the other forms or types of letters.
2. Students could write letter to a local newspaper or congressman.
