Let's Relate It!

Goals:

To relate pirate history to present day locations.

To stimulate background knowledge established through the research project.

To exercise communication skills as a means of discovery.

Content Areas:

Language Arts - writing and communication skills

Social Studies - knowledge of pirates and their havens, geography

Materials:

Construction paper

Scissors

Markers

Notes from research

Any resources from the last four weeks

Procedure: (1 hour)

1) Students can create their own trading cards for a review activity on pirates. Working in their groups, each student will devise one clue for their pirate plus a trading card with the pirate's name.

2) The pirates to be included in this activity are: Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Captain Sir Henry Morgan, Black Beard, John Avery, Captain George Lowther, William Kidd, & Calico Jack Rackham.

3) The cards will be exchanged among the other students who will in turn exchange their trading cards.

4) The person with the pirate's name can only answer yes or no questions.

5) In this activity it will be necessary for the students to walk around the classroom, interacting and asking questions in discovery of the correct pirate.

6) The object is for the person with the descriptive clue to find the correct pirate through a question and answer activity.

Assessment:

The trading cards give the teacher an idea of how much the students learned about their pirate. The trading cards will be handed in and evaluated. Students should write their names on the back of the trading cards. Criteria for success: Students should include well thought out questions that demonstrate new knowledge as a result of their research.

Extensions:

As a final review for all the students, the cards could be taped to the blackboard, face down, as a memory game.
