A Visit to the Local Weather Station
Goals:
To understand the preparation involved everyday to present the day's
forecast.
To understand how the instruments are used to create an overall model
for predicting weather.
To develop an understanding of the terminology and symbols used in presenting
the weather maps.
Materials:
Procedure: (one half day)
The instructor needs to find a meteorologist that uses instruments
every day to complete the above objectives. Students should come prepared
with questions for the meteorologist written out in advance. If there is
an opportunity, an experiment could be done launching a weather balloon.
Assessment:
After the visit, students will have the opportunity to write in their
journals to demonstrate what they gained by visiting their local weather
station. Criteria for success: In their journal entry students must express
a clear understanding of the importance of the instruments used in predicting
weather and be familiar with process of prediction.
Extensions:
Have pairs of students prepare to give the day's forecast each day
at the beginning of class for the next couple weeks.
