Trip Planning

Day 5

Goals:

1. The students will work together to plan a class trip to the Caribbean.

Time:

one and a half hours

Resources/Materials:

chalk, chalkboard, pens, paper, telephone, computers, materials received from letters dealing with travel

Note: On day two of the first week of this unit, a travel agent spoke to the class about ways of getting information to plan a trip to the Caribbean. The students began their initial thinking and plotting out of the plans for their class trip. The students also wrote letters to various places requesting information about travel in the Caribbean Region, in particular their chosen island nation.

Procedure:

1. The class will be broken up into five groups today with each group having a main responsibility in the planning of the trip. One person from each group will be chosen to be the group leader and organizer. These responsibilities include transportation (airplane, car, taxi, bus, train, boat), money (fund-raising ideas, amount of money needed on trip, and hotel accommodations), entertainment (planned activities to do while in the Caribbean Area), passports (how to obtain one and means of getting one), and food/packing (what to bring, where to buy/eat food).

2. Some of these responsibilities overlap and the groups can work together, but when someone has a question about a certain part of the trip, they are to contact the group leader.

3. Each group needs to use outside resources, as well as each other, to plan this part of the trip. Telephones will be accessible to contact airlines, as well as the computer and internet to find any other information for traveling.

4. Students may want to write to other places requesting more information on their designated area of responsibility.

5. After about an hour, the class will come together to share the information that they found. The teacher will act as a facilitator, assisting the students where needed. More time will be set aside next week to make final arrangements on the travel plans.

Assessment:

The students will be assessed on how productive they are within their designated responsibilities. If each group does its responsibility, then they will have a successful trip. The students will also be assessed on their cooperation within the groups. There will be self, as well as peer, evaluations given to all on their performance in the groups. Please see participation rubric found at the end of the week's lessons. The next day that the groups meets to talk about the trip, each member must bring in two facts that deal with their responsibility.

Math - money, fund raising, hotels

English - communication, reading, writing

Self Discovery - outside resources, computers

Possible Extensions:

The students could work in pairs instead of in small groups on each part of the planning of the trip, then compare information and use the best information found for everyone in the class. The students could use this information to assist their parents or other people in planning of family vacations.
