Goals:

1. The students will learn new knowledge, or reinforce what they previously knew, about various cultures and the people of the Caribbean through a new medium - a speaker.

2. The students will ask questions and get immediate responses about various cultures and people, in particular, the Caribbean people.

Time:

1 hour

Resources/Materials:

chalk, chalkboard, speaker, other resources and materials will vary as to what the speaker will bring

1. The teacher will inform the students they will be have a guest speaker today and have them think of a few questions that they might want to ask the speaker.

2. The Anthropologist will explain how various cultures and people interact with one another - in particular the Caribbean people.

3. Students will listen to the speaker and then ask any questions they might have.

4. The speaker will respond to any and all questions.

Assessment:

Students will provide a written response of three new things they learned from this speaker, including various aspects of the cultures of the Caribbean.

Social Studies - history of people and cultures

Math - populations

English - listening, writing

Possible Extensions:

The speaker could possibly bring in various artifacts from different cultures. A knowledgeable speaker on this topic from the Adopt-A-Ship program could visit the class and explain things in other ways.
