A Literary Ocean Hawaiian Adventure

Unit Description

This unit is designed for a middle school curriculum. It works ideally with a pod/house setting consisting of 4 separate classrooms The diagrams below will help to illustrate how the rooms are broken down into different groups (W, X, Y, Z) that will be learning about the Hawaiian islands. Our intention is to mix students from each of the four homerooms together.

Four Different Homerooms: A, B, C, and D (Each homeroom consists of roughly 25

students) will be divided into four groups - W, X, Y, and Z

Groups A, B, C, and D represent the homeroom activities. The grouped students will rotate the order of the islands they attend. The following chart illustrates how the groups will rotate:

Day 1:

2 hours - Introductory Material and Reading Chapter Assigned

(A, B, C, D in homerooms)

4 hours - Each group will work on their individual island

(W, X, Y, Z in groups)

Days 2-8:

1 hour - Everyone will work on their Literature assignment

(A, B, C, D in homerooms)

4 hours - Each group will work on their individual island

(W, X, Y, Z in groups)

1 hour - Groups learn about Hawaii, supplement to Literature Assignment

(A, B, C, D in homerooms)

Days 9-10:

Field Trip to Washington Island
