Gangs

Goals:

  1. To inform students about gangs. Items of discussion include identification, warning signs and prevention.
  2. Put the students in contact with local police officers or other members of the outside community in a positive atmosphere.
  3. Connect the lesson to Chapter 4 of Blue Skin of the Sea.

Resources/Materials:

  1. Guest speaker from the community. This person will likely come from a local police department, though and expert of any kind will do.

Time:

This lesson should take one hour.

Procedure:

  1. In the morning discussion of gangs following the Chapter 4 quiz, have students prepare questions for the guest speaker.
  2. Speaker presentation.
  3. Student questions.

Assessment:

  1. There is no individual assessment for this lesson. Rather, the class will be responsible for generating enough questions for the speaker. (Criteria for success = engaging discussion with guest speaker.)

Curricular strands:

  1. Social Studies: Inquiring about relevant issues and topics of today's society.
  2. Language Arts: Question and answer session with speaker. Developing interrogative questions.
